Suffused with the joyful rhythms of Pakistan’s rich musical heritage, Song of Lahore examines a tradition under siege—yet defiant. The film follows several Pakistani classical musicians and asks a crucial question: Is there still room for cultural expression in a society roiled by religious upheaval? After toiling in obscurity for years, Pakistan’s leading musicians record an innovative jazz album that propels Sachal Studios to international acclaim. The ensemble is then invited to New York City by Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center for a groundbreaking concert. This feature-length documentary by Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Andy Schocken is a dramatic journey into the past and future, essential for all music lovers.
Song of Lahore premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival where it won runner-up for the Audience Award.
